Get your motors runnin' for this FREE family fun event!

With a little family assistance, children design and build a race car out of cardboard. During the main event on Saturday April 16th, the children race their cars around the track complete with a pit stop, in a quest for that checkered flag! Everyone is a winner at the Big Race!

The Big Race is open to all children between the ages of 2 and 8. The event will be held at the Pavilion at Kid's Kingdom in Enterprise Park on Saturday April 16th, races start at 10:00 am. Registration begins at 9:00, and there will be games and activities for the children on Race Day. Parents are encouraged to attend a free workshop that will include tips on building a race car, how to incorporate literacy and science in the race car’s construction, ideas for maintaining a child’s interest in the project, an explanation of race day activities, and a video of last year’s event. The free workshops will last about one hour, and will be held at the following times:

- Friday March 25th @ 5:00 in the Community Room in the Redding Library

- Friday April 1st @ 5:00 in the Community Room in the Redding Library

- Monday April 11th @ 6:00 in the Community Room in the Redding Library

Hoops For Kids!

Active 20-30 Club Members:

Active 20-30 Club of Redding was donated over 200 basketball hoops by an inventor that sold his invention to a German company who decided that it would be cheaper to remanufacturer the basketball hoops in Germany rather than ship them overseas. The invention is a portable telescoping basketball hoop that hooks to the hitch on your vehicle. Here’s what we have going on with the backboards. We just did a giveaway of 15 hoops to kids at the Anderson Street Fair. We are giving 40 hoops to The Child Abuse Prevention Program, we gave 5 hoops to a local football league, 15 to the Chico club, 5 to the Wings of Angels and man to other places as well.

We are ramping up for Basketball Fun Day at Alta Mesa Park which is the same place that we did the playground build and the Easter Egg Hunt. We are going to give each child a basketball hoop, a hot dog and a drink along with a basket of fun. This event is guaranteed to be a hit with the kids and parents. We are planning on taking video and posting it on YouTube for the world to see. These hoops made great raffle prizes! If your club want hoops come and get them! Tell other clubs, spread the word. First come, first serve. We just need a couple dollars per hoop for the custom, high quality, rugged, waterproof stickers we had made that say, “Donated by” and our logo.

Annual Camping Trip

The Active 20-30 Club Camping Trip will be held in Plumas Pines on Lake Almanor this year. The dates are Friday, September 25th through Sunday, September 27th. Camp site fees will be covered so all you need to bring is your self, your necessities and a Happy Camper Smile!!!! :0)

There will be a variety of activities including access to the Plumas Pines Resort with bands playing. We’re also going to be bringing boats to take out on the lake. How much cooler can it be?

We are having our Active 20-30 Club Booth at the Anderson Street Fair this Saturday, September 12th from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Jason Blake with Sign-A-Rama has set this up for us. Jason has been a tremendous supporter of the Redding Active 20-30 Club, having spent numerous hours designing and supplying the Club with various materials including: Hoops for Kids stickers, business cards, event flyers and tickets.

This is a perfect opportunity to get out in public, put on our red shirts and show everyone what we’re all about. HAVING FUN AND HELPING KIDS!!!!!!

The Active 20-30 September Business meeting will be held this Wednesday (9/2) at CR Gibbs @ 6:15. Our business meetings generally run about 1 to 1.5 hours, and we cover upcoming club business, events and volunteer opportunities. Our club has worked out a deal with CR Gibbs so that we will receive happy hour discounts while in the meeting so that you can enjoy the refreshing beverage and appetizer of your choice at a discounted price. They are community-oriented, as evidenced by the growing membership of the 20 to 30 club, and active in the betterment of us all. There are also some fine young leaders in this group. They can be seen around town doing more and talking less….”

Strategic Planning this Saturday!!

The Strategic Planning Session is almost here, Saturday July 25th. The committee has been working to put together a great event that will benefit our club as a whole, as well as provide individual benefits to each member. The session will begin right at 10:00 in the morning at the Sharrah Dunlap Sawyer office building, last into the early afternoon, and be followed up by a potluck at Lyndsay's house. Lunch will be provided at the meeting. We strongly encourage all members to attend, in order for the event to be a success, we will need member participation.

The day will start off with two guest speakers (Dr. Jerry Nystrom and Gary Hayward), then we will participate in a group activity, then a brainstorming session regarding club activities. We will also be holding raffles to win various prizes throughout the day. All members should have received the agenda and speaker bios to check out. Please RSVP to Ian as soon as you can (whether you are coming or not) so that we can be sure to have the correct amount of food. This will be a great event that will really benefit our club. I hope to see everyone there. You must be a club member to attend. As a courtesy to our guest speakers, please arrive on time. In an effort to encourage interaction and camaraderie between Active 20-30 Clubs from different areas, members often “steal” objects from neighboring clubs. In our case, the Redding Club’s banner was stolen on our charter night. However, as a practical joke, when the offending club returned the banner, it was encased in a block of reinforced concrete.

The Redding Club is now using this prank as an opportunity to raise money for future projects that will help the special needs children in our community (please see the link to our RFP and info sheet showing past Club activities http://www.active20-30.com/files/ReddingBannerBidPkg.pdf ). We are looking for a contractor willing to donate money to our cause and extract our banner from the concrete in which it is encased. As the contractor who “bids” the most, you will be rewarded with two tickets to the Active 20-30 Club of Redding’s Past Active Bash and Officer Installment on June 13, 2009 at Win-River Casino’s Eagle Room. Your generous donation with be celebrated at this event with a video presentation of the banner extraction, a plaque commemorating the extraction, and a tri-tip dinner. All contributions made from the banner extraction are tax deductible and all proceeds will go to the Active 20-30 Club of Redding for use in future projects benefiting local children.

Margarita Mix-off time!

Our yearly Margarita Mix-Off is coming up very soon. On Saturday the 30th at 4:00 we will kickoff our 3rd Mix-Off and this time it's going to be better than ever. This event is always a great sucess so please make sure you invite a prospective member to come and have some fun with our great club. Members are encouraged to compete in the Mix-Off. Awards will be given for "Best Margarita", "Best Presentation", "Most Creative" and "Most Authentic". Gather up your blenders and supplies and get your creative lime juices flowing. Event Proposal Guidelines

Proposals due April 15, 2009

Background: The Redding Active 20-30 Club has done a lot of great work during the past couple years for local children and the community. The club has not yet hosted a Redding Active 20-30 event in which members work directly with the children. The membership has requested we take a more “hands on” role, and have club members work directly with the children our club is here to serve.

Objective: The Board Members would like to provide an opportunity for individual members to come up with event ideas in which the club will work directly with children. Written proposals, prepared by all Redding Active 20-30 members who choose to participate, will be evaluated by the Board. Board selected proposals will then be presented to the membership for voting. The icing on the cake is that the winning project will be completed by the club later this year.

Requirements:

The event must involve working directly with children in the community
The event shall be a Redding Active 20-30 Club proprietary event
The event shall be consistent with the Redding Active 20-30 Club Mission Statement (see below)
The event shall be available for all Redding Active 20-30 members to participate if they so choose
The maximum contribution from the club’s general fund is $250 total
The proposal shall include an expected event budget
The proposal shall be submitted to the Board by April 15 at the April social meeting
The Board will determine the semi-finalist proposals
The semi-finalists will be allowed to give a brief presentation during the May 6th business meeting
The proposal will be voted on by the membership at the May 6th business meeting
Members who will not be present to vote at the May 6^th meeting will be able to cast an absentee vote. Upon notification of planned absence, the President will provide details necessary in order to make the decision. The absentee vote will be due to the President prior to the May 6^th business meeting so that the winner will be announced May 6^th
The author of the winning proposal will be appointed as Chair of the Event Committee
The author of the winning proposal will be rewarded with a $50 gift card to a local dining establishment, and awarded the title of “Commander Cool”
- Prospective members whose idea is chosen will not be eligible for the $50 prize but will be awarded title and chair position
- The $50 prize should not be included in the proposed event budget

Mission Statement: Providing Young Adults with an Opportunity for Personal Growth, Friendships, and Leadership Development, While Improving the Quality of Life for Special Needs Children in Our Communities.

2009 National Convention at Cabo

This years national convention is from the 25-28 of June. Cameron found a great deal on airfare and is offering use of his parents condo which will make this trip very cheap. Lodging, airfare from SF, taxes and fees are less than $250 for a whole week. Everything else would need to be budgeted for. We have the option of budgeting food and alcohol as a group and splitting the costs, maybe $50. The condo sleeps 8 comfortably.

Active 20-30 Weekend in Eugene

I (Sherri) recieved this email from Trena who is the regional director of Region 1... we are in Region 2. Please consider the opportunity! Trena herself is so passionate about Active 20-30 and I'm sure this weekend will be amazing. It will also help fulfill your progress toward your Hourglass Award.

This is a final reminder to book your flight or pack your car and get your bootie to Eugene for Region One Weekend March 20-22. We’ll spend time bonding, getting to know one another better and exchanging ideas. The regional meeting will take place on Saturday with a variety of topics on the table – grants, recruitment, fundraising, and motivating members, among other topics. This is your meeting! I’m sending this note out to all members of Region One as well as others who have a lot of great ideas and experience to offer. Why not spend a fun-filled weekend in beautiful Eugene, Oregon. Toss in a little Oregon wine and good friends and the good times are sure to be endless. Vineet has offered his home – floors & couches – while space allows. We’ll find additional home hosting for any overflow. Shoot me a note and let me know you’re in so we can plan accordingly.

Crab Feed Thank You

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped out at the Crab Feed this weekend. As you can see the event could not happen without the help of all the volunteers (200+ to be exact). The people from the Shasta Women's Refuge were very thankful to have our help to make the event successful. I hope everyone had a good time and got to mingle with some people. It was great exposure for the club, and I think that we may get some new members out of the deal. All of the money went to a good cause, and will help some children that really need the help. All I know is that I don't want to see another Crab anytime soon, I am still trying to get the smell out of my clothes. Thanks again.

National Midterm Meeting

The National Midterm meeting is coming up the weekend of January 24th. This year's event will be hosted by North Bay. There is no cost to attend the meeting and hang out with your friends from clubs across the country. Housing: a block of discount rooms are reserved at Hampton Inn in Rohnert Park for $84/night. Call and put one in your name if you need a place to stay. The North Bay club has a large passenger van for Friday and Saturday to help get guests around. Friday night they are planning a bar crawl through Cotati. Saturday morning after the meeting and break out sessions, they will head to Lagunitas Brewery in Petaluma for a tour and tasting. They will have everyone back to hotels in time to get ready for the Redwood Empire' Crab Feed in the evening. Please let Sherri know if you are interested in attending.

Member Spotlight: Cameron Middleton

Cameron Middleton is an area native, born and raised in Redding. He is a 1997 graduate of Shasta High School, continuing his education at the University of California at Berkeley. He has been a realtor with the House of Realty since 2005. His latest endeavor has been opening River City Java located on Hilltop Drive and downtown on N. Market Street. He has generously donated his delicious java at several of our volunteer events.

Cameron is one of the Redding Active 20-30 Club’s original charter members, and is currently serving as a board member. The opportunity “to give back to [his] community” is what originally attracted Cameron to the Active 20-30 Club. “Since our charter in 2006, I have been encouraged by the willingness of the members—young professionals in the Redding area, to lend a hand and to make Redding a better place”. Cameron in looking forward to the club’s growth and the impact the Active 20-30 Club will have on our community.

Charity Poker Tournament

The first annual Holiday Classic poker tournament was a huge success! We were able to raise $1,750 for the Wings of Angels charity. There were 59 people who played and one of our own members worked the poker moustache and sunglasses to place fifth and take home a little cash. Members Help at Canned Food Drive

Bright and early Thanksgiving morning, several members of Redding’s Active 20-30 Club braved low-40s temperatures to help out at the first annual Turkey Trot canned food drive. They exchanged raffle tickets for money and canned food, and helped to collect an entire barrel of food, as well as more than $60 in cash. Proceeds went directly to the Good News Rescue Mission. As a result, some of our local families will have been relieved of hunger during this holiday season. Thank you to Kristin Nystrom, Will McElvain, Heather Lightbody, Lisa Bee, Josh Corbelli, Bryan Like, Andrea Alexander and Sherri Stripling for helping to make this event a success!

Holiday Classic Poker

The first annual Holiday Classic Poker Tournament is just around the corner. Active 20-30 Club of Redding is delighted to support the Alyssa Araiza Wings of Angels this year. This organization, dedicated to children with cancer and serious illness, was founded in May 2002 to honor the memory of a courageous and beautiful Redding girl who died shortly after her ninth birthday after a five year battle with cancer. The goal at "Wings of Angels" is to help families who are required to travel out of the area for treatment in ways other organizations do not.

The Wings of Angels Spaghetti Feed was a heartfelt event and a huge success. Young Quentin, who was featured in the Redding Record Searchlight, was in attendance and was a joy to be around. He was contagiously upbeat, despite his struggles with cancer. Our club volunteered approximately 50 hours the day of the event, increased attendance by promoting the spaghetti feed, and pre-sold nearly $1,000 in raffle tickets. Thank you to those of you whom attended, bought raffle tickets, and sold raffle tickets.

We would like to extend a special thank you to the following volunteers who helped with setup, parking, poker promotion, bussing tables, and cleanup:

Calling All Volunteers for the Wings of Angels Spaghetti Feed

The Alyssa Araiza “Wings of Angels” Organization is committed to aiding north state families who have children with cancer and other serious illnesses. Wings helps these families to travel for medical treatment and provides unique support to families in ways that other organizations do not. Founded in May 2002, Wings honors the courage of nine year-old Alyssa who died shortly after her ninth birthday after a five year battle with cancer. Wings of Angels will host their annual Spaghetti Feed on Saturday, October 25th from 2-9pm. Here are some photos from the 2007 event. This year is our first year volunteering.

Regional Meeting October 25th

The fall Region 2 meeting is scheduled for October 25, 2008 in Napa, California. The time for the meeting will be 10 AM-2 PM. Lunch will be served. Following the region 2 meeting, the Napa club will be hosting its annual “Halloween Extravaganza.” This year’s theme is “VIP Vegas” featuring the band “Pop Rocks.” The event will be held at the Napa Fairgrounds. Tickets are $55 in advance or $60 at the door. For more information, contact Danielle Gularte, Napa Club President.

The camping trip was a huge success. The scenery was beautiful, the drinks were flowing, and the company was fantastic! Thank you to Bryan for organizing the event and to Robert for providing the camp out location. Happy birthday, Robert!!!

Member Spotlight - Don Renz

Don, shown with wife Christine, is one of the newest additions to our Active 20-30 family. Don graduated from San Jose State University in 2002 with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. He passed his Professional Engineers exam in 2006 and currently works as a Civil Engineer at KRB Engineering. He has recently been seen volunteering at the Playground Build, Adopt-a-Highway, and Shasta High School Sober Grad. With much experience in Texas Hold ‘em, Don is currently on the committee for the Charity Poker Tournament coming up on December 7th.

We were recently awarded the organizational award for Excellence in Public Health by Shasta County Public Health. We are committed to building a healthier community by providing children in our surrounding area with the means to live an active and healthy lifestyle.

The Alta Mesa Park Playground Build

Our largest contribution to our Redding Community (to date) was the coordination of the new Alta Mesa Park Playground with the City of Redding. With the help of Kaboom!, the playground was planned and built using the grants awarded to us by California Volunteers and Shasta Regional Community Fund. We were awarded a total of $60K in grants. Not only did we raise the money for the community project, but we rallied over 300 volunteers, organized meals for our awesome volunteers and collected materials needed for the build. Our community exemplified the ten core values of Cesar E. Chavez for whom this build celebrates. Please read about Design Day, Prep Day, and Build Day.
